Even Brahma Fears Time
Bhagavata Purana 11.10.30
Meaning · English
Beings of the worlds fear me, and so do the guardians of the worlds, who live through a whole age. Even Brahma, whose life runs to two parardhas, has his fear of me.
Three words carry the verse. Lokapala means world-guardian: loka is world, pala is one who protects. Kalpa is a vast cycle of time, a single day of Brahma, and kalpa-jivin means one whose life lasts that long. Parardha is half of Brahma's life, so two parardhas is his whole span. Bhaya is fear, a shrinking before something that can end you. Krishna tells Uddhava that those who dwell in the worlds fear him. So do the guardians, who live for ages, and so does Brahma, the longest-lived being there is. The commentators read this as fear of the end that time brings, since every length of life is measured out and closed by the Lord. The text's own heading says why Krishna teaches it. The self is bound by taking the body for itself, and the worlds it clings to are not lasting. The fear is the proof. If the most powerful and long-lived still tremble, then no post, no age, no height of position gives safety. Krishna is not describing a cruel God. He is showing Uddhava that nothing in the worlds can be leaned on. The verse asks the listener to see that long life and high rank are only a longer wait.
Two lamps are lit at dusk. One has a thimble of oil and burns an hour. The other has a deep brass reservoir and burns till morning. Both go dark when the oil is done. The bigger reservoir changes the hour, not the ending. The small lamp is an ordinary life, the big one Brahma's, and the oil is the time Krishna measures out.
1. Tonight, name one thing you rely on to feel secure: a job title, savings, good health, someone's good opinion. 2. Ask plainly whether it could last a hundred years. Take one minute, and write the answer if that helps. 3. Notice whether your grip on it loosens even slightly. Then do one small task today without carrying that worry into it.
A man stands at his manager's retirement party. She ran the department for thirty years, and her hands look unsure without the keys she has just handed over. He had always thought of her as part of the building. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, it says the length of a position never made it permanent, since even the guardians of the worlds and Brahma are named as fearing the Lord who ends their terms. Second, the man can look at his own ambitions and see that they borrow security from a post that has an end date. Third, he can ask what, in himself, does not depend on a post. The text gives its own answer in the surrounding verses, where fear lasts as long as dependence does. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: the longer a person holds a role, the harder it is to picture life outside it. The verse does not promise the man will feel calm at his own farewell, nor that grief over a lost role or a coming end will fade. It offers a place to stand while it is felt.
