The gunas bring forth actions, and one guna follows upon another. The soul, joined to the gunas, enjoys the fruits of what is done. As long as the gunas are uneven, so long the self seems many. And as long as the self seems many, so long it is not its own master.

Three words carry this. Guna means a strand, like one thread twisted into a rope; the text speaks of three strands of nature that make up mind and body. Karma is action, and karmaphala is its fruit, what comes back to the doer. Nanatva means manyness, from nana, various. Krishna tells Uddhava how the knot is tied. The strands themselves produce actions, and one strand gives rise to the next, the way a mood gives rise to another mood. The jiva, the soul living in a body, is joined to these strands and so tastes the fruits as if it had done everything itself. Then comes the measure. While the strands are uneven, pulling one way and then another, the self seems to be many: a calm one, a restless one, a dull one. And while it seems many, it is paratantra, under another's rule, not its own master. Why teach this here? Uddhava asked how someone living among the gunas can be bound or free. Krishna answers that the binding is this identification with what nature is doing. Sridhara Svami's commentary reads the bondage as arising from taking the body for the self. The verse asks the listener to see the doer in the strands, and to stop signing every action with a personal name.

A rope is twisted from three threads, and each thread tugs differently when the rope is pulled. Someone watching only the tugging believes there are three ropes. The threads are the gunas, the tugging is the many moods, and the one rope is the self that only seemed divided.

1. Choose one mood that arrives this evening, such as irritation or restlessness, and note the time it begins. 2. Say quietly to yourself, "a strand is acting," instead of "I am angry." 3. Watch it for five minutes without acting on it. Notice whether it changes on its own. 4. At bedtime, recall how many different selves spoke today, and which one you would have called yourself.

A mother stands at the kitchen counter after a long day, her child crying, and she snaps. Ten minutes later, calm, she is ashamed and wonders which of the two women is really her. The verse speaks to exactly this. Krishna's teaching is that the snapping and the calm are both movements of the gunas, one following the other, and that the self which watches both is not the same as either. Step by step: she notices the sharpness rising, names it as a passing state rather than a verdict on her character, and pauses before speaking. Ordinary experience confirms that hunger, tiredness and noise tilt a person toward harshness, and that the same person is gentler when rested. Seeing a mood as a mood gives a little room to choose. The limit is plain: the verse does not remove the exhaustion, the child's crying, or the need for real rest and help. Where low mood or anger is constant and heavy, a doctor is the right person to see.
