As long as the self is not its own master, so long there is fear of the Lord. Those who stay fixed on this dependence are bewildered and handed over to sorrow. Time, the self, the scriptures, the world, one's own nature, and dharma: so they speak of me in many ways, when the guṇas are stirred together and mixed.
Three words carry this. Asvatantratva means not being one's own master; it is dependence, being steered by something else. Ishvara is the Lord, the one who rules. Guna is a strand of nature, and the text counts three that make up everything we meet and everything we feel. Krishna tells Uddhava that fear of the Lord lasts exactly as long as the self is dependent. The fear is not a threat from outside. It is what dependence feels like. Then he warns about those who keep dwelling on this state as if it were the whole truth. They are bewildered and soaked in grief. Last, he explains why people name him so differently. Some say time, some say the self, some say scripture, the world, one's nature, or dharma. All of this happens while the guṇas are mixed and disturbed, so each person catches one side and calls it the whole. Sridhara Svami reads these names as one Lord seen through different partial views. The question behind it is Uddhava's: how can one who is bound ever be free? Krishna first says why binding is felt as fear and confusion. It asks the listener to notice that fear, grief and the many explanations all belong to the same dependent state.
A tenant fears the landlord's knock only while he lives in a house that is not his. He guesses at the landlord's mood and calls him by many names, depending on the day. The fear comes from the renting. Krishna says the self fears the Lord in the same way, while it depends on the guṇas and does not own itself.
1. Tonight, take five quiet minutes and name one thing you are afraid of this week. 2. Next to it, write what you are depending on: a person's reply, a payment, a result. 3. Notice whether the fear is about the thing itself or about not holding the strings. 4. Say aloud, once, that this is what dependence feels like, and leave the page there.
A woman sits in a bank manager's waiting room, holding a folder of papers, her loan decision still to come. Her stomach is tight. She rehearses a dozen explanations of what he might want, calling it luck, her record, the season, his mood. Krishna's teaching says the fear and the many explanations come from one place: she does not hold the decision. In that moment the teaching would first let her see that the tightness belongs to waiting on another's hand and does not prove she has done wrong. She could then notice that each explanation catches only one side of a mixed situation. Then she could do the one part that is hers: check the papers, breathe slowly, and answer plainly when called. Ordinary experience confirms that fear grows when outcomes sit in someone else's hands and shrinks when we do the small things within reach. The teaching does not promise the loan, or that the fear will vanish. It does not replace a doctor if anxiety grows heavy and lasting.
