Mind and Objects Feed Each Other

The mind enters the objects of the senses, and the objects enter the mind, O living beings. Both the mind and its objects belong to the embodied soul, who is my own self. The mind keeps entering the objects, because it keeps serving them. The objects in turn arise from the mind. One who rests in my nature should let go of both.

Three words carry the verse. Guna means a quality or strand of nature. Here it stands for the sense-objects that colour the mind: sounds, sights, tastes and the wishes they stir. Citta is the mind as a store of impressions, from a root meaning to perceive. Sevā means service, attending on something again and again. The Swan, in Krishna's retelling, describes a loop. The mind goes into its objects, and the objects go into the mind. The mind keeps returning to them because it keeps serving them, and the objects arise from the mind's own gathering of impressions. Each one feeds the other. Both, the Swan says, belong to the embodied jiva. They are what the self carries, not what the self is. This answers the sages' trouble. They asked how the mind can let go of objects when objects are in the mind and the mind in them. The Swan agrees the knot is real, then points past it. Pulling objects out of the mind, or the mind out of objects, goes nowhere, because each rebuilds the other. The way out is to rest in the self that stands behind the loop. Then both can be dropped together. The verse asks the listener to see the loop as a habit that service sustains, and to see that the one who watches it is not the mind.

A fire and the wood that feeds it. The fire seems to need the wood, and the wood is only wood because the fire has turned it to flame. Neither can be put out by arguing with the other. The one who sits warming their hands is neither the fire nor the wood, as the self is neither mind nor object.

1. Tonight, choose one habit your mind returns to without asking, such as checking a phone or replaying an annoyance. 2. The next time it pulls, wait ten slow breaths before acting on it. 3. Say quietly, "I am watching the mind go there." 4. At bedtime, note how many times the pull came and whether the watcher was still there each time.

A man comes home after a bad day and opens a shopping app. He wants nothing in particular. Twenty minutes later his cart is full and his shoulders are still tight. Each item he looks at makes him want to look at another. The verse reads this moment as a loop. The mind goes toward the objects, and the objects shape what the mind then wants. Ordinary experience confirms the part about repetition: what we attend to again and again becomes easier to attend to again. The text's teaching is that the one who sees this is not the loop. So the man can notice the wanting as something moving in the mind, and notice that he is aware of it. The Swan says that this awareness, which belongs to the self, is where both mind and objects can be let go. In practice that may only mean a pause before the next tap. The verse does not promise the tightness in his shoulders will lift, and it does not settle what lies behind the tiredness. If the restlessness is heavy or constant, a doctor is the right person to ask.
