Waking, dream and deep sleep are workings of the intellect, arising from the three qualities. The living self is set apart from them, known for certain as their witness. When this bondage to rebirth gives the self its tie to the qualities and their workings, let one stand in me, the fourth, and give it up. That giving up is the letting go of minds bound to the qualities.
Three words carry this teaching. Guna means a quality or strand of nature, from a root for a thread that binds; the text counts three, and they shape how the mind moves. Sakshi means witness, from sa and akshi, 'with the eye': one who is present and sees, without taking part. Turya means simply 'the fourth'. Krishna, retelling the Swan's words, starts with a plain list. Waking, dream and deep sleep are all workings of the intellect, produced by the qualities. Each is a state the mind passes through. The living self, jiva, is different in kind from all three, because it is what sees each one come and go. That is how the text settles the matter: it is the witness. The bondage of rebirth is what ties the self to the qualities and their workings. The Swan's remedy is to stand in Krishna, the fourth, and let that tie fall away. The commentators read 'me' and 'the fourth' together: the witness rests in Krishna himself. This answers the question the Swan was asked, how the mind lets go of what it clings to. Straining at the objects does not work. Seeing that you were never the mind's states does. The teaching asks the listener to notice the one who watches, and to rest there.
A man sits on a station bench while three trains pass in turn: the bright morning one, the crowded evening one, the dark empty one. He rides none of them. He is the one on the bench who sees each arrive and leave. The trains are waking, dream and sleep, and the bench is the witness.
1. Tonight, just before sleep, spend one minute noticing the day has ended: the waking state is closing, and you saw it close. 2. When you wake tomorrow, notice the moment you move from sleep to waking. Ask quietly, 'Who noticed that?' 3. Once during the day, when a strong mood arrives, say to yourself, 'A mood is passing through, and I am watching it.' Stay with that for a minute.
A man wakes at three in the morning from a dream of missing a flight. His heart is pounding and his body believes it. Then he lies still and realises it was a dream. The panic did not come from the room; it came from a state that has now ended. The verse asks him to go one step further. The dream, the waking that followed and the sleep before them are all states he passed through. Something in him knew each one, and that is what the text calls the witness. He does not need to fight the dream or argue with the fear. He can see that he is the one who saw it, and from there the grip loosens a little. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: we say 'I slept badly' and 'I had a strange dream', so something in us already stands apart and reports. The text takes that everyday fact and rests its teaching on it. The limit is plain. This does not cure poor sleep or stop nightmares. If waking at night is frequent, or the fear stays through the day, a doctor should be asked.
