The Deeper Blindness
Isha Upanishad 1.12
Meaning · English
Those who worship what is not the origin walk into blind gloom. Those who delight in the origin, it seems, walk into a gloom deeper still.
Three words carry the verse. Andha means blind, and tamas means darkness: a gloom in which nothing can be seen. Sambhuti comes from sam, together, and bhu, to become. It is the source that brings things into being. Asambhuti is its opposite, what is not that source. The Isha says two kinds of people end up in the dark. The first worship the wrong thing, and the text calls their dark blind. The second delight in the source itself, and the text says their dark is greater, adding 'as it were' to soften the claim. Shankara's reading, which is his and not the verse's own, takes asambhuti as unformed nature and sambhuti as the first manifest being, and he reads both as limited objects of worship. The reason is that each is a piece taken for the whole. The second group is worse off because delight in a good thing feels like arrival, so they stop looking. The verse asks the listener to notice when devotion has become a resting place.
Someone stares at a bright lamp for a long minute, then walks into a dim hallway. They are blinder than a person who never looked at it. The lamp stands for the good thing loved, and the hallway for all that it does not show.
1. Tonight, pick one belief or habit you hold dear, such as a favourite explanation of why things happen. 2. Write one sentence on what it explains well. 3. Write one sentence on what it leaves unexplained. 4. Tomorrow, ask someone who sees it differently what they notice, and listen for five minutes without answering.
A woman walks her failed field the morning after the harvest should have come. Her neighbours each offer one cause: the rain, the seed seller, bad luck. Each is certain, and each is a little pleased with the answer. The verse would slow her at the first certainty. Step one: notice which explanation she is most drawn to, because that is the one she will stop questioning. Step two: ask what it leaves out. Step three: keep the others open long enough to hear what they add. The Isha teaches that devotion to even the highest source can close the eyes when it is taken as the whole. Ordinary experience agrees that the explanation we love is the one we stop testing. The verse does not say which explanation is right, and it does not bring back the crop or ease the loss. It names a habit of the mind and asks that she not rest in it.
