The effect exists beforehand in its cause: because what is not cannot be produced; because a fitting material is taken up; because not everything comes from everything; because the capable makes only what it can; and because the effect shares the cause's nature.

When a pot is made, does something new come into being, or does something already present come into view? Samkhya answers with satkarya, 'the effect is existent': the product already exists, unmanifest, in its cause. Ishvarakrishna gives five reasons. First, what is wholly absent cannot be produced. Gaudapada notes that no one gets oil from sand. Second, people seek a particular material: whoever wants curd takes milk, not water. Third, not everything arises from everything. Gold does not turn up in grass or dust. Fourth, a capable cause makes only what it is capable of. A potter with clay, wheel and stick makes a pot from the lump of clay, not from anything at all. Fifth, the effect has the cause's nature: barley grows from barley, rice from rice. From this, Gaudapada draws the system's conclusion. The visible world must already lie in a subtle source, prakriti, nature in its unmanifest state.

A rolled carpet in a shop looks like a plain cylinder. Unroll it and a full pattern appears, every flower and border in place. Nothing was woven during the unrolling. The pattern only came into view. Samkhya pictures all making this way: the cause is the rolled carpet, the effect is the pattern, and production is the unrolling.

The closest modern echo is conservation. In physics, matter and energy are not made from nothing but transformed, and chemistry needs the right starting materials. No reaction turns sand into oil. That sits well beside the first three reasons, as a loose comparison only. Physics says nothing about an unmanifest prakriti. The harder claim is that the effect itself, the pot, already exists. Most modern philosophers would say the clay exists beforehand, while the pot's shape is new structure. Debates about emergence ask whether a whole adds anything real over its parts, and that question remains open. Hume argued that we never see an effect inside its cause. We only learn from repeated experience which thing follows which. That challenges the fourth and fifth reasons. Whether satkarya describes the world or our way of describing it is still debated.
