The manifest has a cause, is impermanent, not all-pervading, active, many, supported by another, dissolving, made of parts, and dependent on another. The unmanifest is the reverse.
Samkhya holds that nature shows itself in two states. The question now is how to tell them apart. The manifest, vyakta, is everything that has unfolded: intellect, the sense of 'I', the mind and senses, the subtle elements and the five gross elements. The unmanifest, avyakta, is prakriti, nature itself, before anything unfolds. The manifest has nine marks. It has a cause. Gaudapada traces each layer to the one before it, such as earth to the subtle element of smell, all the way back to prakriti. It is impermanent. Gaudapada explains: because it arises from something else, like a pot from clay. It is not all-pervading. It is active. Gaudapada reads this as moving from life to life in a subtle body. It is many. It rests on something else. It dissolves back, layer by layer, into its source. It has parts, which for Gaudapada are sound, touch, form, taste and smell. It is governed by another. For Samkhya the unmanifest is the reverse on every count. It is uncaused, eternal, everywhere, one and self-standing. It also has no parts and does not dissolve. Nothing lies behind it.
Picture waves on a lake on a windy day. Each wave is raised by something. It lasts a moment, covers only a patch of water, travels, has its own shape, and sinks back into the lake. There are countless waves. The water itself does not come and go in that way. The waves stand for the manifest world, and the body of water stands for the unmanifest.
Much of the list fits ordinary experience and today's science. Everything we observe, from galaxies to neurons, is composite, caused, local, changing and temporary. The open part is the other half of the claim: that beneath it all lies one uncaused, undivided ground. Physics has conservation laws, under which energy is transformed rather than created or destroyed in a closed system. That is only a loose comparison. Physics does not describe a single unmanifest substance, and cosmology has not settled whether anything is uncaused. One feature looks surprisingly modern. Samkhya places intellect and ego on the side of matter, as natural processes. A physicalist would agree. Samkhya still keeps consciousness itself apart from matter. That is close to the hard problem of consciousness, and it remains unresolved.
