Made of the three gunas, not separable from them, an object, common to all, unconscious, productive: such is the manifest, and such is the primal source. The person is the reverse of these, and yet also alike.

What do the visible world and its hidden root have in common, and what stands outside both? Samkhya names six shared marks. Everything manifest, and pradhana, the unmanifest root of nature, is made of the three gunas, the strands that make up nature. Gaudapada argues that an effect has the nature of its cause: black threads make black cloth, so pradhana itself must carry the three gunas it produces. It is aviveki, not separable from those strands. Gaudapada explains that you cannot point to the thing here and its gunas there, as you can point to a cow and then a horse. It is an object, there to be experienced. It is common, open to every experiencer alike. It is unconscious: it does not itself feel pleasure, pain or confusion, just as unconscious clay makes only an unconscious pot. And it is productive, giving rise to further things, as buddhi gives rise to ahankara, and that in turn to the senses and elements. Purusha, the conscious witness, is the reverse on every count. The closing words add a likeness too, usually read as purusha sharing, among other things, the root's being uncaused and lasting.

Picture a film playing in a cinema, with the unspooled reels still in their cans. Picture and reels are the same stuff, both there to be watched, open to anyone in the room, aware of nothing. The person in the seat is none of these. The film is the manifest world, the reels are its unmanifest source, and the viewer is purusha.

This is a form of dualism, and an unusual one. Samkhya puts thinking, memory and the sense of self on the matter side, as working parts of nature. Only bare awareness stands apart. Today's physicalism disagrees at that last step. It holds that awareness, like the rest of the mind, arises from the brain. Neuroscience has strong evidence tying experience to brain activity. There is no evidence for a witness that exists separately from it. Still, Samkhya's dividing line falls close to a distinction modern philosophy of mind also draws. Explaining how the brain processes information is one task. Explaining why any of it is felt from the inside, the hard problem of consciousness, is another. That second question remains open, and the school's answer is one serious option in the debate.
