The gunas are of the nature of pleasure, pain and dullness. They serve to light, to set moving and to hold in place. They work by overpowering, supporting, producing, pairing with and acting through one another.
What is nature actually made of? Samkhya answers: three gunas, a word that means strands, as in the strands of a rope. Sattva is the strand of pleasure, rajas of pain or unease, tamas of dullness and confusion. Gaudapada reads the word for 'purpose' as 'capacity': sattva can reveal, rajas can set things in motion, tamas can restrain and hold still. Then the sutra names five ways they relate. They overpower one another: when sattva rises, the other two recede. They lean on one another, Gaudapada says, as two atoms make one pair. They give rise to one another, as a lump of clay gives rise to a pot. They pair like a couple. And they act through one another. His example is one virtuous woman who brings joy to all, pain to her co-wives and confusion to those who desire her, so sattva alone sets the other two working. So, for Samkhya, nothing is made of one guna alone. Every experience is all three in some mix, with one on top.
Picture a braided cord of three colours: white, red and black. Cut it anywhere and all three strands are in the slice, though at that spot one colour shows more on the surface. Twist the cord a little and another colour comes up. The gunas work the same way: never apart, always one cord, with one or another uppermost.
Psychology describes moods along two broad lines: how pleasant or unpleasant a state feels, and how active or sluggish it is. Sattva and rajas map loosely onto pleasant and agitated, tamas onto low energy and fog. That fit is real, though rough. The bolder claim has no modern match. Samkhya places these three in matter itself, not only in minds. Physics describes matter with mass, charge and fields, and finds nothing like pleasure or dullness there. Tamas and physical inertia share a word, not a theory. What stays open is the question underneath: why physical processes come with any felt tone at all. That is the hard problem of consciousness. Samkhya's own picture would place a feeling-tone in matter while keeping awareness itself apart, in purusha.
