Three gunas like a lamp

Meaning · English
Sattva is held to be light and illuminating. Rajas is stimulating and restless. Tamas is heavy and concealing. Like a lamp, they work together toward a single purpose.
If all of nature (prakriti) is woven from three strands, the gunas, what does each one do? And how can opposites cooperate? Samkhya holds that sattva is light and illuminates. Gaudapada reads this through the body: when sattva dominates, the limbs feel light, the mind is bright and the senses are clear. Rajas stirs things up and keeps moving. His picture is a bull roused at the sight of a rival bull. When rajas dominates, the mind is restless. Tamas is heavy and covers. When tamas dominates, the limbs feel heavy and the senses are clouded, unable to take in what is in front of them. Then comes the objection: if the three oppose one another, how can they produce anything together? The verse answers with a lamp, and Gaudapada spells it out: oil, wick and fire are at odds, yet joined they give light. For Samkhya, then, the gunas do not cancel out. Their working together is what gets anything done. And the single purpose they serve is the purusha's, pure consciousness: its experience and, in the end, its liberation.
1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes to recall three moments from your day: one that felt light and clear, one that felt restless and driven, and one that felt heavy and dull. 2. Tomorrow, on waking, notice for thirty seconds whether your body feels light, restless or heavy. Name it without trying to change it. 3. Once during the day, look at any lamp or stove flame for a minute. Pick out the fuel, the wick or burner, and the flame, and notice that none of them gives light alone.
The gunas are not a physical theory. Physics has no three basic substances matching them, and they cannot be measured. As a description of states, though, they sit close to how psychology talks about arousal and mood: alert clarity, agitated drive and sluggish fog are familiar to any doctor discussing sleep, stress or fatigue. Psychology also holds that some arousal helps focus and too much hurts it, which fits the idea of qualities in balance rather than a single good one. Neuroscience offers a loose parallel in the way excitation and inhibition must work together in the nervous system. One striking point is that Samkhya places even mental clarity on the side of matter. That anticipates no modern result, but it does stand beside today's debate between physicalism and dualism, which remains open.
