Inferring the Hidden Cause

Non-separability and the other marks are established because things are made of the three gunas, and because their opposite is never found. Since an effect has the nature of its cause, the unmanifest too is established.
The question is how anyone can claim that prakriti, nature in its unseen root state, exists, when nobody has ever perceived it. Samkhya answers by reasoning backward from what can be seen. Everything manifest, from bodies to minds to objects, carries certain marks. Gaudapada lists them. It is aviveki, never separable from the three gunas, the strands of brightness, activity and inertia. It is an object of experience. It is shared by many. It is not conscious. It produces further things. These marks hold because everything is woven of the gunas, and nothing lacking them is ever found. Gaudapada's example: where the threads are, the cloth is. They are not two separate things. The second step is that an effect has the nature of its cause, as black threads make black cloth. So the unseen cause must carry the same marks. Samkhya concludes that the unmanifest is known by inference, not by sight. Gaudapada adds that being unperceived is not the same as being absent.
A freshly painted wall is a soft green. You never saw the tins opened, yet you can say a good deal about what went in: blue and yellow pigment, no red, a base that dried to that sheen. The wall can only show what the paint already held. Samkhya reasons the same way, from the visible world to its unseen source.
The method holds up well. Inferring an unseen cause from the character of its effects is how much of science works. Atoms and genes were reasoned to before anyone could observe them. The principle that effects share their causes' nature is weaker today. Chemistry and biology are full of emergence, where a whole has properties its parts lack. Water is wet, but a single water molecule is not. So 'black threads, black cloth' fits some cases, not all. Conservation laws, where energy changes form but never appears from nothing, are only a loose parallel to Samkhya's view that effects pre-exist in their cause. The three gunas have no counterpart in physics. They classify qualities of experience more than particles. Whether the world rests on one underlying stuff is still open.
