Because particular things are limited in measure, because they share one nature, because things act through their capacity, because cause and effect stand apart, and because the whole manifold world merges back undivided.

The question: everything we meet is particular and changing. Must it all come from one unseen source? Samkhya says yes, and gives five reasons. That source is prakriti, nature in its unmanifest state, before anything has taken shape. Gaudapada explains each reason. First, limitation: the products of nature come in fixed numbers, one intellect, one sense of self, five subtle elements, eleven senses, five gross elements. A potter turns measured lumps of clay into a countable number of pots, so limited things point to a maker-material behind them. Second, shared nature: seeing a boy keeping the vows of a Vedic student (brahmacharin), one infers his parents are brahmins. The world is made of the three gunas, so its source must be too. Third, capacity: a potter able to make pots makes pots, not cloth or chariots, so the world's activity points to a cause with the capacity to produce it. Fourth, difference: a pot holds milk and honey, its clay lump cannot, so cause and effect are distinct. Fifth, return: at dissolution the elements merge back, stage by stage, into one undivided state.

A rolled sheet of cookie dough. The cutter presses out a set number of stars and moons, each made of the same dough, each shaped by what the cutter can make. The finished cookies hold their shape. The scraps get pressed back into one smooth ball. The dough is prakriti; the shapes are the particular things of the world.

The form of the argument is familiar today: shared features in many things suggest a common origin, as shared structure points biologists to common ancestry. Hume and later Kant pressed hard on such reasoning, asking whether features of the effects really fix one single cause, or any cause at all. That challenge applies here too. Notably, Samkhya's conclusion is not a creator God but an unconscious material source, closer in spirit to a naturalist picture. Physics offers loose echoes: conservation laws say matter and energy change form without vanishing, and cosmology traces the universe back to an early, more uniform state. These are comparisons only. Physics does not describe that state as made of three gunas, and whether everything must return to one undivided source remains a philosophical claim, not a finding.
