The cause exists: the unmanifest. It goes into action through the three gunas and through their combining, transforming like water, varying with the particular seat of each and every guna.

The question behind it: if everything comes from one root, why is the world so varied? Samkhya first holds that the root is real. It is the avyakta, the unmanifest: prakriti, nature before it has taken any shape. It acts in two ways. First, through its three gunas, or strands: sattva (clarity, ease), rajas (drive, restlessness) and tamas (heaviness, dullness). Second, through their combining. Gaudapada pictures three streams of the Ganga falling on Shiva's head and flowing on as one river, or threads woven into one cloth. Then comes the objection: one source should give one kind of result. The reply is transformation, which differs by where each guna settles and which one leads. Gaudapada's example is rain that falls with a single taste and takes many tastes from what it touches. In Gaudapada's reading, in gods sattva leads, so they are happy. In humans rajas leads, so they suffer. In animals tamas leads, so they are dull. Gaudapada notes that this verse and the one before it complete the case that prakriti exists.

Picture a baker with only flour, water and yeast. Mostly flour with little water gives a stiff flatbread. More water and time give an airy loaf. More water still gives a thin batter. Nothing new was added, only the balance changed. That maps to prakriti: one stock of three gunas, and the variety of things comes from which strand dominates in each mixture.

The core move, one underlying stuff producing endless variety through different proportions and arrangements, has a loose echo in chemistry, where a modest set of elements combines into countless substances. It also echoes physics' search for a unified account of matter. That echo is a comparison only. The gunas are not measurable physical quantities and have no match in any modern theory. Read psychologically, they loosely resemble temperament models that sort people by calm, drive and inertia. Even so, the commentary's ranking of gods as happy, humans as suffering and animals as dull has no scientific support. What stays open is the larger shape. Samkhya derives all of matter and mind from one source, yet keeps consciousness apart as purusha. That is a dualism, and it bears directly on the unresolved hard problem of consciousness.
