Three Named Conches

Bhagavad Gita 1.15

Meaning · English

Hrishikesha, Lord of the senses, blew the conch Panchajanya. Arjuna, winner of wealth, blew Devadatta. Bheema, of herculean deeds and a voracious belly, blew the mighty conch Paundra.

Sanjaya gives three names to three conches, and each blower gets a title. Hrishikesha is a name of Krishna: hrishika means the senses, isha means master, so he is the Lord of the mind and senses. Dhananjaya is Arjuna, the winner of wealth. Bhima-karma means one whose deeds are herculean, and vrikodara, wolf-belly, is the voracious eater, Bheema. Each warrior has a signature sound, as each has a title that says what he is known for. Sanjaya is a reporter, and this is his account of what he hears. He tells it to a blind king who cannot see the field, so he has to name who is sounding what. Details like these also show he is not guessing: he speaks like someone standing there. Of the commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva are usually read as treating this opening scene as narration that prepares the ground for Arjuna's collapse, not as a place for doctrine. Nothing is asked of the listener here. The verse only sets the scene, and the names put one calm figure, the master of the senses, beside two men known for strength and appetite.

Picture a village fair where each drummer is introduced by name and each beats a different rhythm, so a blind listener at the edge could tell who is playing. Sanjaya's list works that way: names and titles let the king hear the field as if he were standing on it.

1. Today, before one task you are dreading, stop for a few breaths and notice where the dread sits in your body. 2. Name it quietly to yourself in one plain word, such as tight, rushed or afraid. 3. Then begin the task and see whether naming it changed how it felt.

A woman waits in a corridor outside the operating theatre where her husband is having surgery. Doors bang, a trolley rattles past, a monitor beeps somewhere, and every sound seems to be about him. She cannot see inside, so she listens hard and tries to make out what each noise means. Sanjaya does something like this for the king: he names each sound and its maker, and the confusion becomes a list. For her, the same step is small. She can say to herself that this is the trolley, this is a phone, this is a nurse's voice, and that sorting noise from news lets her breathing slow a little. Ordinary experience confirms that a named fear feels smaller than a shapeless one. The text does not say Sanjaya is calm, and the verse does not promise that naming sounds will make anyone feel safe. It does not tell her the surgery will go well, and it takes the place of neither the surgeon's word nor a doctor's care.
