Dressed for the Belly

Meaning · English

Matted locks, a shaven head, hair plucked out, robes of ochre — so many costumes. The fool looks and still does not see: all this dress is for the belly.

Four ways a holy man can look: hair grown into matted ropes, a head shaved bare, hair plucked out by hand, a body wrapped in ochre cloth. Each one announces that the world has been left behind. Yet each can be put on to get fed, since people give food to a renunciant. The fool sees the robe and misses what it covers, and the one wearing it can miss it too. Changing the outside costs a razor or a length of dyed cloth. Nothing inside has to move.

A biscuit tin sits on the shelf, golden cookies printed on its lid. Open it: needles, spools of thread, loose buttons. A guest reaches for it hoping for a biscuit. The ochre cloth is that lid. It promises a mind that has let go; underneath there may be only hunger.
