Toothless and Still Grasping

Bhaja Govindam 15

Meaning · English

The body worn out, the head grey, the mouth toothless. The old man walks gripping a stick, and still he will not let go of the lump of his hopes.

The body has given up nearly everything it had. The limbs are wasted, the head has gone grey, the teeth are gone, and walking now takes a stick. One thing has not aged at all: wanting. The word used covers hope and expectation together, and it is pictured as a lump, something packed hard and held close. So he grips two things. His hand closes on the stick to stay upright, and he will not open his hold on what he still hopes to get.

A candle burnt down to a stub, the wax pooled and nearly gone, yet the flame on top stands as tall as it did on the first evening. The body is the wax, shrinking a little every year. The wanting is the flame, and it takes no notice of how little is left beneath it.
