Meaning · English

Fire in front, sun behind; at night, knees drawn to the chin; alms in the bare palm, a home under a tree — yet craving's noose does not let go.

A man who owns nothing warms his face at a fire and his back in the sun, and at night curls up against the cold, knees to his chin. He has no bowl, so food goes straight into his palm, and his only roof is a tree. What still holds him is a noose, and the word for it means hope as much as craving: not greed, just the quiet expectation that something more is coming. He has given up the things. The wanting has not given him up.

A child loses a balloon at the fair and watches it float away. All the way home the child's hand stays curled shut, closed around nothing. The balloon is everything the man under the tree no longer owns. The shut hand is the wanting: the grip outlasts the thing it held.
