Pilgrimage Is Not Knowing
Bhaja Govindam 17
Meaning · English
A person may journey to where the Ganga meets the sea, keep vows faithfully, or give gifts; without knowledge, by every view, a hundred births bring no freedom.
People count three things as religious credit: the long trip to where the Ganga enters the sea, a vow kept to the letter, and a gift given. All three are things done. Freedom depends on knowing instead, and without knowing, the doing never adds up to it. Every school of thought agrees on this. The hundred births make the same point about time: more of it will not close the gap.
Someone walks a treadmill every morning. The legs grow strong, the shirt soaks through, the display says ten kilometres, and they step off in the same room. The pilgrimage, the vow and the gift are that walking. The good they do is real. It just is not distance.
