The verse and its meaning · Stotras · Stotras — Bhaja Govindam
A Bed of Bare Earth
Bhaja Govindam 18
Meaning · English
Living in a temple or under a tree, the bare earth for a bed, deerskin for clothes, every possession and pleasure given up: whom does dispassion not make happy?
The first half lists a life with very little in it: shelter in a temple or under a tree, the ground to sleep on, a deerskin to wear, every possession and enjoyment given up. The second half asks a question whose answer is no one: whom does virāga not make happy? Rāga is colour, the pull a thing has on us. Virāga is that colour drained away. The verse says the happiness comes from virāga itself, not from the hard bed or the bare shelter.
A traveller hauls a heavy suitcase across a station, sets it down, and sits on a hard wooden bench. The bench is not comfortable. The relief is in the arms and shoulders, now empty. The bare ground and the deerskin are that bench. The ease comes from what was put down.
