Glad in Any Life
Bhaja Govindam 19
Meaning · English
Whether given to discipline or given to pleasure, whether among company or apart from it, the one whose mind delights in Brahman is glad, glad, glad indeed.
Four lives are set side by side and then set aside. One person keeps strict discipline, another enjoys the world. One lives among people, another alone. None of them is ranked. What counts is where the mind likes to be. The word for delight is the word for play: a mind that plays in Brahman, the reality behind everything, is at home there. Such a person is glad, and the word comes three times, because the gladness does not hang on which life is being lived.
Carry a compass through a crowded bazaar, into an empty room, onto a rattling bus, across a still lake. The needle swings a little and settles north every time; what holds it is not the place it passes through. A mind resting in Brahman is like that: practice or pleasure, crowd or solitude, it settles in the same gladness.
