No Quarrel With Death

Bhaja Govindam 20

Meaning · English

Whoever has studied a little of the Bhagavad Gita, sipped one drop of Ganga water, and worshipped Krishna even once: Death has no quarrel with that person.

Three acts are named, and each is kept deliberately small: a little of the Bhagavad Gita actually studied, one drop of Ganga water actually drunk, and Krishna, called Murari, worshipped even once. No library is asked for, and no lifetime of ritual. What counts is that the thing was really done. The last word is the one for a dispute or a debate. When Yama, the lord of death, comes for such a person, he finds nothing to dispute.

On a train, the ticket checker walks down the aisle. One passenger holds up a small punched ticket, and the checker moves on without a word. Another passenger has a bag full of papers and no ticket, and gets stopped and questioned. A little Gita, a drop of Ganga water and one act of worship are that ticket.
