Born Again and Again
Bhaja Govindam 21
Meaning · English
Born again, dead again, again asleep in a mother's womb. This round of lives is hard to cross and has no far shore. Murari, in your mercy, save me.
The word 'again' does the work. Born, then dead, then back in a mother's womb, then born once more. This world of coming and going is called very hard to cross, and then boundless, with no far bank to aim for. The last line stops describing and turns to Murari, Krishna as the slayer of the demon Mura, asking for one thing: protection, given out of mercy. No study or method for getting out is offered.
A child on a merry-go-round rides a painted horse, round after round. The ride does not stop because the child is tired, and stepping off while it spins is not possible. Someone at the edge has to reach in and lift the child down. Each round is a birth; the verse asks for that lift, not a stronger grip.
