I learned this teaching from her, O subduer of foes, while I wandered among these worlds, wishing to know the truth of the world. Where many live together, quarrel arises. Even between two, there is talk. So let one walk alone, like the bangle of the girl.
The avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling, is closing the lesson he took from the girl and her bangles, and he speaks to King Yadu. He says where he learned it: wandering among people, wanting to know what the world is really like. That wish is lokatattvavivitsa. Loka is world or people, tattva is thatness, what a thing truly is, and vivitsa is the wish to know. So he was not hiding from the world. He was studying it. What he saw is simple. Where many live together, kalaha follows, which is quarrel, noise, friction. Even two people produce varta, talk, the steady back-and-forth of news and remark. The girl's bangles showed it. With many on her wrist they clattered, with two they still rang, and with one there was silence. From this he draws his rule: eka eva caret, let one walk alone. Caret means to move, to live one's way, not merely to sit apart. The commentators take this as counsel for the wandering renunciant. It is not a verdict on people. It is a report on noise, and on what a mind needs when it wants to hear itself. He asks of Yadu only that he see this plainly.
A fishing jetty at high tide. Boats tied side by side knock their hulls together all night, rope creaking, wood grinding on wood. One boat at anchor in open water makes no sound at all. The crowded jetty is the many in one house. The boat alone is the walker.
1. Tonight or tomorrow, take ten minutes after a meal and walk alone, phone left behind. 2. Notice how your mind sounds once nobody is near it. Is it louder or quieter than you expected? 3. At the next small argument at home or work, ask afterward what it was really about, and whether it was only the friction of being close. 4. Return to the people you live with, and notice whether your patience is any different.
A young mother is three days into a wedding at her in-laws' house. Twenty relatives, one bathroom, questions from every side. At eleven at night she slips up to the terrace, and her shoulders drop. Within a minute she notices she was about to snap at her cousin over a borrowed shawl. The verse names what she is feeling. Crowding wears patience thin, and even pleasant talk between two people costs something. Ordinary experience bears this out: people who are tired and never alone quarrel over small things. On the terrace, step by step, she stops answering, hears her own breath, and sees that the shawl was never the trouble. Ten minutes later she goes down and is gentler. The text offers this as an observation of the avadhuta, who was a wanderer by calling. It does not promise that family quarrels will end, and it does not say people should live cut off. If someone is alone all the time and feels low, that is a matter for a doctor or a trusted person, not a teaching to lean on.
