Having weighed it so, and settled that the mind's three states are laid upon me by my own maya through the qualities, cut the doubt that lives in the heart with the sword of knowledge, sharpened by reasoning and by the words of the wise, and turn to me, the ground of every doubt. See this bewilderment as the mind's play: seen, then gone, like a firebrand whirled into a circle. Knowing is one, yet it shows as many. Maya is a dream, a fancy built in three ways from the outpouring of the qualities. Then draw the gaze back, let craving cease, and be quiet, tasting one's own happiness, free of striving. If the world is seen again, it has been given up as no real thing, and remembering it will not bewilder, until the body falls.

Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality; the text says three strands pour out the mind's states of waking, dream and deep sleep. Maya means the power by which one knowing appears as many things. Nivritta-trishna means craving turned back, thirst that has stopped chasing. The Swan, in Krishna's retelling, first asks the sages to reason their way to a settled view: the mind's three states are made in him, by his maya. Doubt still sits in the heart, so he gives the tool for it, knowledge as a sword. It is sharpened two ways, by reasoning and by the words of the wise. The commentators read the closing call to turn to him as the last act once doubt is cut. Then comes the sight itself. The whirling mind throws up the world the way a swung torch draws a ring that was never there. Knowing is one, and the many is a dream shaped by the strands. This answers Brahma's question: if the objects are in the mind, letting go means seeing what the mind is doing, not wrestling the objects. The gaze then turns back. Craving ends, speech quiets, and contentment comes from one's own self, with no scheming. The last clause removes a fear: when the world shows up again, it was already set aside as no real thing, so memory of it cannot pull the knower back before the body drops.

A cinema screen shows a storm, a wedding, a burning house. People weep and cheer, yet the screen stays one plain white cloth, and when the film ends nothing on it has been harmed. The many scenes are the mind's play of the qualities; the screen is the one knowing they appear on.

1. Tonight, when a worry replays itself, say to yourself, "the mind is doing this," and watch it for one minute without arguing. 2. Notice where it starts and where it fades. Does it end by itself? 3. Sit quietly for five minutes after dinner with nothing in your hands. Notice how it feels to want nothing for that short time. 4. If the worry returns later, let it come, and do not follow it.

A man lies awake at two in the morning, replaying an argument with his brother over their father's land. Each replay adds a sharper reply and a darker guess about what the brother meant. By dawn the quarrel feels larger than the one that happened. The Swan's teaching would change that hour step by step. First, the thought is named as the mind's activity: seen, then gone. Second, the circle is noticed as a circle, made by repetition, not by a new fact. Third, the gaze turns from the story to the one who is watching it, and the craving to win the argument loosens. Fourth, when the memory comes back at breakfast, it is only a memory, and it does not have to bewilder. Ordinary experience confirms that worries grow loud at night and shrink in daylight and after sleep. The verse does not promise the quarrel will be settled, the land divided fairly, or the grief of a strained family removed. A person who cannot sleep for many nights, or who feels unsafe in their thoughts, needs a doctor as well as a teaching.
