What I have told you, brahmins, is the hidden core of Sankhya and Yoga. Know that I came here as a swan, as the sages' own question about dharma called me. I am the refuge of yoga, of Sankhya, of truth and right order, of radiance, of prosperity, of fame, and of self-control. All the qualities turn to me, who have no qualities of my own and need nothing from anyone. I am the friend, the dearest one, the self. Even evenness of mind, freedom from clinging, and the other virtues come to me.
Three words carry this teaching. Parayana means the final refuge, the place a path ends. Nirguna means without the gunas, the qualities or strands that make up everything in the world of change. Nirapeksha means needing nothing, with no dependence on anyone. The Swan, in Krishna's retelling, first says that what he has just taught is the hidden heart of Sankhya, the way of discerning self from not-self, and of Yoga, the way of steadying the mind. He says he came as a swan because the sages' wish to understand dharma drew him. Then he names what he is the refuge of: the two paths themselves, truth and right order, radiance, prosperity, fame and self-control. Whatever anyone seeks through these ends in him. Then he says all the qualities, even evenness of mind and freedom from clinging, seek him, though he has none of them as a possession. He needs nothing. He is also the friend, the dearest one, and the self of each person. The reason is the question put to the Swan: how can the mind let go of its objects? Here the answer is that the mind lets go by finding where it rests. Virtues are not the goal. They are what gather around the one who is the goal. The sages are asked to take refuge in him, and not to chase calm or detachment as prizes. Sridhara Svami reads this as Krishna showing himself as the one resting place of every path.
A village well at dusk. Women, children and cattle-drivers come with different pots, each wanting something different, and each goes away filled. The well was never anxious about any of them. The visitors are the qualities and paths, and the well is the one they all come to, needing nothing back.
1. Tonight, name one quality you wish you had more of, such as patience, calm or steadiness. 2. Instead of forcing it, sit for two minutes and say quietly that you are turning toward the one who has all of it and needs nothing. 3. Tomorrow, when that quality is tested, pause for one breath before acting. Notice whether the pause itself steadies you.
A mother sits at three in the morning beside a feverish child, her patience wearing thin, wishing she were a calmer person. She tries to force calm and it does not hold. What the Swan's words change is where she looks. Calm is not something she has to manufacture from nothing; in Krishna's telling, evenness and non-clinging come to the one who is the refuge. So she turns to him first, then to the child, and the next small task, a cool cloth, a sip of water, is done from a steadier place. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness weakens restraint, so her thin patience at that hour is no failure of character. The verse does not promise the fever will break, or that she will feel calm all night. It is no substitute for a doctor if the child needs one.
