The Golden Lid

Isha Upanishad 1.15

Meaning · English

The face of the true is covered by a golden vessel. Draw it back, Pushan, nourisher, so that I, whose way is the true, may see it.

Three words carry it. Patra is a vessel, a dish or lid. Hiranmaya says it is made of gold. Satya is the true, what really is, from a root meaning to be. The Isha says the face of the true is covered by a golden lid. The covering is not dark or ugly. It shines, and that is the difficulty: a bright thing is looked at and admired, and nobody thinks to ask what lies beneath it. Then the speaker turns to Pushan, the nourisher, a name for the sun, and asks him to uncover it. Apavrinu means to open, to take the cover away. The speaker does not claim to lift it himself. He asks. He gives his reason in satyadharma, one whose practice, whose dharma, is the true, and in drishti, sight. He wants to see, and he offers his steady loyalty to the true as his ground for asking. Shankara reads Pushan as the sun, and the golden disk as the sun's blazing orb. The reality he calls Brahman, the one source of everything, stands within it, hidden by its own brilliance. The prayer asks that the brilliance be parted so that this can be seen.

A polished brass lid on a cooking pot. Its shine catches the eye, and people admire the lid and never ask what is simmering inside. The golden disk is that lid: what is dazzling, taken for the whole thing, while the true waits underneath, unseen.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you are drawn to: a purchase, a goal, a compliment you hope for. Write one line on how it looks from outside. 2. Under it, write one plain line on what it would actually ask of you, and what it would leave out. 3. Sit quietly for two minutes before sleep. Ask, in your own words, to see the thing as it is. Notice whether the shine eases a little.

A woman is offered a senior post with a handsome salary, a title and a corner room. It would also mean long hours far from her father, who lives alone and is unwell. The offer gleams so much that she keeps rehearsing the announcement to friends and does not look past it. The verse asks for something simple at that point: wanting to see what is under the shine. She names what draws her. She asks what the days would look like, who would sit with her father, and what she would feel in a year. She also asks for clearer sight, not only for a decision. Ordinary experience bears this out: a glittering prospect is easily mistaken for the whole of it, and a pause often shows what is missing. The verse does not say which choice is right. It does not remove the pull of the offer, and it cannot answer her father's medical needs, which belong to his doctor.
