Meaning · English

Pushan, sole seer, regulator, sun, child of Prajapati: draw in your rays and gather your light. The form of yours that is most gracious, that I see. The person who is there, in the sun, that person I am.

Three words carry this. Pushan is a name of the sun as nourisher and guide. Prajapati is the lord of creatures, the sun's source, so the sun is called his child. Purusha means person, here the one who dwells in the sun's light. The Isha has just asked Pushan to open the golden lid over the True. Now the speaker asks the sun to draw in its rays and gather its brilliance, until what is left is its kindest form. He says he sees it. Then he states who that person is: I am he. The reason given is the problem of the lid. The glare of the rays hides the one who shines. The Isha teaches that when the glare is gathered in, what is seen is not a stranger. Nothing here asks the listener to do anything except see. Shankara reads the last words as the identity of the self within the body and the person in the sun, one and the same, with no difference between them. Each clause matters: the rays are drawn in, the light is gathered, the fairest form is seen, and the seer recognises himself in it.

Look at a lamp through a bare, glaring bulb: you see only the dazzle. Put a shade over it and the glare softens, and you can finally see the filament, the thing that actually gives the light. The rays are the dazzle; the person in the sun is the filament, and the seer finds he is made of the same.

1. Choose a morning when the sun is low, or a lamp in the evening. Stand or sit facing it for one minute, eyes half closed, not staring straight at the sun. 2. Notice the glare first, then the soft warmth behind it. Let your gaze settle on the warmth. 3. Say quietly the last words of the verse once: I am what that is. Notice how it feels to say it, without forcing anything. 4. Then go about your day.

A man walks out of a hospital waiting room at dusk after hearing his father will be fine, though the night was long. He stops in the car park and the low sun is in his eyes. For a moment he cannot see anything but glare. He shields his face, steps sideways, and the brightness settles into a plain orange disc over the rooftops. He notices he has stopped holding his breath. The verse speaks to that moment of glare giving way. The Isha asks for the rays to be drawn in so the one behind them can be seen, and it says the seer is not outside what he sees. Step by step: first the dazzle, then the narrowing of attention, then a quiet recognition that the looker and the light are not strangers. Ordinary experience confirms that a calm, steady gaze sees more than a strained one. The verse does not promise that fear will not return, that a father's illness will pass, or that anyone can do without a doctor. It speaks only of what is seen when the glare is gathered in.
