"Bound" and "free" are only ways of speaking. They come from the gunas, not from what I am in truth. The gunas themselves rest on maya, so for me there is no liberation and no binding. Grief and delusion, pleasure and pain, the taking of a body: all of it comes through maya. As a dream is a showing of the self to itself, so the round of worldly life is not real in fact.
Krishna begins by loosening the two words everyone leans on, bound and free. He says they describe how a self looks through the gunas, the qualities or strands that colour experience. They do not describe what the self is. Three words matter here. Guna is a strand or quality. Maya is the power by which appearance takes shape; its root sense is measuring out, forming. Samsara is the round of worldly life, a wandering from one state to another. Vastutah means in truth, in the thing as it stands. The clauses run in order. Bound and free are labels from the gunas. The gunas rest on maya. So in his own nature there is neither binding nor release. Grief, delusion, pleasure, pain and taking up a body all come through maya. Worldly life is like a dream, the self showing itself to itself, and it is not real in the way the dreamer thinks. The commentators read the "me" as the self in its own nature, apart from the body it seems to wear. Krishna teaches this first because Uddhava asked what binds and what frees. Before he gives the marks of each, he says where the whole question stands. He asks Uddhava to hold the words lightly.
At dusk a man sees a snake on the path. His heart pounds and he jumps back. Someone brings a lamp, and it is a coil of rope. The fear was real, but the snake never was. Bound and free work the same way: they describe how things looked in poor light, not what lay on the path.
1. Tonight, when a worry or a pleasure comes, name it in one plain line: "This is grief," or "This is wanting." 2. Ask what you took the thing to be when it arrived, and write that beside it in a few words. 3. Sit quietly for two minutes and let the feeling be there without answering it. 4. Before sleep, notice whether it looks the same as it did in the afternoon.
A young man wakes at four in the morning, heart racing, certain for a few seconds that he has failed the exam and lost his place. Then the room comes back: the fan, the cupboard, his brother asleep. The pounding takes a minute to settle. Ordinary experience bears out the first half of that: the body answers a dream as if it were fact. The verse, as the text teaches it, asks him to read the longer round of grief and pleasure in that light. Fear arrives with its full weight, and yet it comes through an appearance and not from the self. In the moment, that gives him a small step to take. He names what he felt, sees what he took it to be, and lets the strength of the feeling stop being the proof of what it says. The verse does not say grief is absent, or that a loss is nothing. It is no replacement for a doctor when the racing heart or the low mood does not pass.
