Know this, Uddhava: knowledge and ignorance are my two forms, shaped by my maya for embodied beings. They are the first of its works, one bringing release, the other binding. Of one single part of me, the individual soul, O wise one, the binding comes through ignorance and has no beginning. Through knowledge comes the other state, freedom.
Three words carry the verse. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know or find. Avidya is its lack, not knowing what one is. Maya is Krishna's power to make appearances, from ma, to measure out or fashion. Jiva is the embodied soul, from jiv, to live. Krishna tells Uddhava that knowledge and ignorance are both his own powers. Maya fashioned them, and they are the first things it fashioned. One gives release and the other gives binding. Then he narrows the view. There is no crowd of two kinds of souls. There is one jiva, a part of Krishna, and the binding comes to it through ignorance. That binding has no beginning, so no moment can be found when it was first tied. Knowledge gives the other state. This answers the question left open by the lines before it, where Krishna says bound and free are only manners of speaking. If that is so, why does the soul seem to suffer? Because ignorance is real as a condition, though it never touched his own nature. Sridhara Svami reads the jiva as a part of Krishna, bound by beginningless ignorance and freed by knowledge. The commentators differ on how that part stands to the whole. It asks Uddhava to see that his own condition is not fixed. Knowing is the thing that changes it.
A necklace chain lies knotted in a drawer. No link is broken and nothing is missing, and the chain has always been whole. Patient fingers loosen the tangle. The chain is the soul, the knot is ignorance, and the loosening is knowledge, which changes how the chain lies without changing what it is.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes with one thing that troubled you today. 2. Ask what you took for granted about it without checking: someone's motive, your own worth, how a situation would end. 3. Write that assumption in one plain sentence. 4. Tomorrow, find one fact or ask one question that tests it. Notice whether the knot loosens even slightly.
A woman waits at a bus stop, still sure that her sister's long silence means anger. For two years she has answered it with silence of her own, and the distance has grown. Then a cousin mentions, in passing, that her sister was ill all that time and told no one. Nothing about the sister changed in that moment. Only a belief did, and the whole tangle began to give. The hurt had been tied by what she did not know. The text teaches the same shape on a far larger scale: the binding of the soul comes through not knowing, and release comes through knowing. Ordinary experience confirms the small version, that a wrong belief shapes what we feel and do until it is corrected. The verse would also change the next step. She would stop treating her own long hurt as a fixed fact about her life and see it as something held in place by a gap in what she knew. The limit is plain. Learning the truth does not give back the lost years, and it does not make the sister well. Krishna's teaching here is about the soul's deeper binding, not a promise that every sorrow dissolves when a fact is found.
