Meaning · English

Now I will tell you how the bound and the free differ, two with opposite natures who stand in one place. Two birds, alike and friends, have by chance made their nest in the same tree. One of them eats the fruit of the pippala tree. The other eats nothing, and yet he is the stronger.

Three words carry the picture. Baddha means bound, from bandh, to tie. Mukta means freed, from muc, to let go. Sakha means friend, one who sits beside you. The pippala is the fig tree, and its fruit stands for what living in a body offers: pleasure, pain, results. Krishna begins by promising to show how the bound and the free differ, though they stand in one body and look alike. Then he gives a picture. Two birds of the same kind, close as friends, happen to nest in one tree. The tree is the body. One bird eats the fruit and is caught up in its sweetness and sourness. The other eats none and is still the stronger, because he needs nothing from the tree. The picture answers a puzzle left by the earlier verses. Krishna has just said that bound and free are only names given by the gunas, so a listener wonders how the two really differ. The answer is not in the body or the place. It is in whether the one inside is hungry for the fruit. The commentators take the two birds as the bound and the free of the opening line. Nothing here asks Uddhava to cast one bird out. It asks him to see both in himself, and to see which one he has been feeding.

Two friends sit at a tea stall. One tears into a plate of pakoras, glancing at the plate as it empties, anxious it will run out. The other sips water, relaxed, in no hurry. The eater is the bird bound to the fruit. The one who needs nothing from the plate is the free bird, who is steady for exactly that reason.

1. At one meal today, eat the first five bites slowly and without a screen. 2. Notice two things at once: the taste, and the part of you that is aware of the taste. 3. This evening, when a worry starts to chew at you, stop for one minute and say silently, "Someone is eating this. Someone is watching." 4. Notice whether the watcher feels even slightly steadier than the worrier.

A mother lies awake at two in the morning, replaying an argument with her sister, tasting each sharp word again and rewording her answers. Then she notices that she is doing this. Someone is replaying, and someone is aware of the replaying. The verse speaks to that small gap. Krishna teaches that the bound is the bird that eats the fruit and the free is the bird that watches without needing it. For her, the first step is only to see the argument as something being chewed rather than something that simply is. She does not have to win it tonight. Ordinary experience confirms that a worry loosens a little once it is named as a worry. The verse does not promise that the quarrel ends, that the hurt is unreal, or that sleep will come. If nights like this repeat for weeks, a family doctor is the right person to speak to. What the verse gives is a place to stand while the fruit is still in the mouth.
