Awake Inside the Body

Bhagavata Purana 11.11.7

The wise one knows himself and the other as well: he is the one who does not eat the fruit, not the one who eats. Whoever is joined to ignorance is always bound; whoever is made of knowledge is always free. The knower, though in a body, is not held by it, like a man risen from a dream. The dull-witted, though beyond the body, stays in it, like a man still dreaming.

Three words carry the verse. Avidya is ignorance, from vid, to know, with a negating a: not-knowing what one is. Vidya is knowledge of the same root. Dehastha means standing in the body, from deha, body, and stha, to stand. The first half goes back to the two companions on one tree, from 11.11.5. One eats the fruit, and the other watches without eating. Krishna says the wise person knows both, himself and the other, and knows he is the watcher. The commentators take the other as the Lord. Then the plain contrast. Someone bound up with avidya stays bound. Someone whose nature is vidya is free. The word nitya, always, tells us this is a standing condition and not a mood. The last half gives the picture. A person who wakes from a dream still has the body but no longer believes the dream's events. The knower is like that: living in a body, not taken in by it. The dull-witted one is like the dreamer, who feels trapped in a body and its troubles even where the body is not the self. Krishna teaches this to Uddhava, who is about to lose his friend and his familiar life. The verse names what actually binds. Circumstances do not bind him. Mistaking what he is does.

A tenant who knows the house is rented cooks, sleeps and mends the tap in it, yet is not shaken when a crack appears in the wall. The man who thinks he is the house itself trembles at every crack. The body is the house, and the knower lives in it as a tenant.

1. Tonight, when you lie down, name three things that belong to the day: a body that was tired, a worry, a task. Say quietly, "These were happening in front of me." 2. Tomorrow, when something stings, such as a hard word or a sore back, pause for three breaths and say "the body is hurting" or "the mind is upset" instead of "I am hurt." 3. Notice whether the sting loosens even slightly.

Picture a woman who wakes at three in the morning from a dream that she has missed her exam. Her heart is racing and her palms are damp. For a few seconds the fear is entirely real. Then she knows she was dreaming. The fear does not vanish at once, but it stops being believed, and she turns over and sleeps. Her body did all the work of fear, but she knew it was a dream, and the dream lost its hold. The verse asks for that same waking in daytime. A sharp message from a relative sets the body racing in the same way. Krishna's teaching is that the knower, still living in the body, no longer takes the pounding as the whole of what he is. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a fear that has been seen as only a fear loses some of its grip. The limit is plain. The verse does not stop the racing heart, ease grief, or replace a doctor when the heart or the mind needs treatment. It speaks of who is aware of the body, not of how the body gets mended.
