Senses move among their objects, and the qualities of nature move among their own kind. One who knows, and is unchanged within, does not say "I am the doer" when these are taken in. This body stands under the sway of fate, and it acts through work shaped by the qualities. The one without understanding lives in it and is bound by the thought: "I am the doer."

Krishna tells Uddhava how the wise and the unwise stand in the same body. Three words carry it. Indriya, the senses, are the organs that reach out to take in sight, sound, taste and touch. Guna, the qualities, are the three strands of nature, which Krishna says shape every action. Kartri, the doer, is the one who claims "I did this." Krishna's first clause says that senses meet objects, and qualities meet qualities. Seeing, hearing and eating are a meeting of nature with nature. The knower, who is avikriya, unchanged within, does not step in and say "I am doing it." The second clause says the body itself is under daiva, fate, the working out of what was already set going. It acts through karma shaped by the qualities. The unwise person lives inside this and adds one thought, "I am the doer," and that thought is the rope. Krishna gives this as the reason one bird in the tree is bound and the other free. The question behind it is what exactly binds. His answer is not the body, the senses or the work, but the claim of ownership laid over them. It asks Uddhava to see where action ends and the claiming begins. Sridhara Svami reads the bondage as coming from taking the self to be the doer, not from doing itself.

A passenger on a train feels the carriage lurch and hears the wheels, and may begin to think, "I am driving." The engine runs on its own track. Bondage is that false claim of driving; the traveller who knows he is only riding sits easy.

1. Choose one ordinary act today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and do it slowly. 2. Notice the hands, eyes and feet doing their work, and the moment the thought "I am doing this" arrives. 3. When it arrives, just see it, as you would see a passing cloud, and carry on. 4. In the evening, recall one thing you took full credit or blame for, and ask what else was moving in it.

A nurse finishes a double shift and a patient she cared for takes a bad turn. She replays every choice, certain it was all hers to control. The verse, as the text teaches it, would loosen that grip step by step. First she sees how much moved at once: her trained hands, her tired senses, the patient's body, the ward's pace. Then she notices the added thought, "I alone did this," and sees it as a separate act from the work. Then she can still act well tomorrow without carrying that claim. Ordinary experience agrees that blame and pride often run ahead of what any one person actually controlled. The limit is plain. The teaching does not say her actions do not matter, does not remove grief or the need to review care honestly, and does not replace the counsel of colleagues or a doctor when she is worn down.
