Dispassionate in this way, the knower lies down, sits, walks about, bathes, sees, touches, smells, eats, hears, and does the rest. Even while using the qualities of things, he is not bound as others are. He stands in nature yet clings to nothing, like the sky, the sun and the wind. With doubt cut away by sharp knowledge and by clear seeing without attachment, he turns back from the many-ness of things, like one awakened from a dream.
Krishna begins with the word viraktah, dispassionate. Vairagya is the colour gone out of craving. The food is still tasted, but it no longer commands. Next is asanga, non-attachment: sanga is sticking to a thing, so asanga is touching without sticking. Then vaisharadya, skill or clear seeing, the sharpness of a mind that knows what it looks at. Last is nanatva, many-ness, the world taken as a crowd of separate things each promising something. Krishna lists ordinary acts: lying down, sitting, walking, bathing, seeing, touching, smelling, eating, hearing. The wise person does all of them. What differs is that he is not bound as others are. Then come three comparisons. The sky holds clouds and smoke and is not stained. The sun shines on clean and filthy places alike. The wind passes through everything and clings to none. He lives in nature, among its qualities, yet attached to none. The cause is stated: knowledge sharpened until it cuts doubt. The commentators take this as the axe that fells the tree of worldly life. With doubt cut, he withdraws from many-ness as a person wakes and sees the dream was one mind's play. Uddhava has asked what binds and what frees. Krishna answers that the bond is not in the acts. It lies in clinging and in doubt. The listener is asked to look for those two, not to abandon eating, bathing or walking.
A duck climbs out of the pond, gives one shake, and the water runs off its back. It swam in the whole pond and carries none of it. The wise person moves through food, sound and touch the same way, fully in them and wet by none.
1. At one meal today, eat the first three mouthfuls slowly and taste them fully. Notice the moment the wish for more arrives. 2. Once this afternoon, when a sound, smell or sight pulls at you, say silently "heard" or "seen" and carry on with what you were doing. 3. Tonight, recall one pull that let go once you noticed it. Spend a minute on how that felt.
A woman is stuck in a crowded train carriage, delayed for forty minutes. Someone's elbow presses her ribs, a stranger's lunch fills the air, and the heat is rising. She feels irritation and a sharp wish for it to be over. The verse changes the moment in steps. First she sees that these are sense contacts: pressure, smell, heat. Second, she sees the wish rising and does not obey it at once. Third, she sees that the discomfort and the story she is telling about it are two different things. Krishna's teaching is that this clear seeing, kept sharp, cuts the doubt and the clinging that make a delay into a bondage. Ordinary experience agrees that a pull noticed before acting usually loosens its hold. The verse does not shorten the delay, cool the carriage or remove real distress. If heat, crowding or breathlessness make her unwell, she needs air, rest and a doctor, not a better attitude.
