One whose breath, senses, mind and understanding no longer work from willed plans is wholly freed, though he still lives in the body, from the qualities that belong to the body. If violent people injure his body, or something comes to him by chance, or someone honors him somewhere, the wise one is not changed by it.
Krishna begins with sankalpa, from sam and klp, to fashion together. It is the mind's habit of building plans and pictures: let this be mine, let that never happen. He says the free person's prana (the breath of life), indriyas (the senses), manas (the mind) and buddhi (the understanding) still work, but without that constant fashioning. They are called vrittis, turnings or movements. The word guna here means the qualities that come with having a body: hunger, pleasure, pain, heat, cold. A free person still has them. He is not bound by them. Then Krishna gives two tests. Violent people may injure the body, or something may come by chance, or someone may honor him. The budha, the awakened one, from budh, to wake, is not turned inside out by any of it. Sridhara Svami reads this as the mark of one liberated while still living. Krishna says this to Uddhava because Uddhava has asked how the bound differ from the free. The answer is not a change of address or of body. It is whether anything inside is still held by the body's weather. Uddhava is asked to look for that difference, in others and in himself.
A wooden post stands at a river bathing step. Children splash it, someone hangs a marigold garland on it, someone else bumps it with a boat, and the post keeps standing in its place. The body takes the blows and the garlands. The one who is free is like the post only in staying put.
1. Today, catch one moment of praise or one sharp word, however small. 2. Before you answer, take three slow breaths and feel where it landed in your body. 3. Ask: did something about me change, or only the way I feel just now? 4. That evening, write two lines on what you noticed. Do not judge the answer.
A schoolteacher is stopped at the gate by a parent who shouts about a grade, in front of other families. By afternoon another parent hands her a bouquet and thanks her loudly. Both moments tug at her. Krishna's teaching, as it is given, points to what stays steady beneath them. She can notice the heat in her face and the lift in her chest as events of the body and the day. She can ask whether either one has said anything about who she is. Then she can answer the parent calmly and thank the other without needing more. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, hungry person is stung more easily by a slight. The teaching does not promise she will feel nothing, or that the shouting will not hurt. It does not replace help when harm is real: someone who is truly threatened should seek safety, and an injured body should see a doctor.
