The thoughtful sage does not praise and does not blame the one who acts, whether the act is good or bad. Free of speaking in terms of merit and fault, he sees all with the same eye. He does not do, say or dwell on anything as good or bad. Delighting in the Self, he moves through the world by this way of living, like one who is inert.

Four words carry this teaching. Samadrk is "same-seeing": sama, equal, and drk, sight. Muni is one who thinks deeply, from man, to think. Atmarama joins atman, the Self, with arama, a garden of delight. It names one who takes his pleasure in the Self the way others take it in a garden. Jadavat is "like something inert", from jada, still and unmoving. Krishna tells Uddhava that the wise one neither praises nor blames people, whether what they do is good or bad. He does not talk in terms of merits and faults, because he is clear of the habit of sorting everything into them. He sees all alike. Krishna then goes further. This person does not busy himself with doing, saying or brooding over what is good or bad. Content in the Self, he goes about in this manner, like someone inert. The commentators read the word as "like": he is not dull, he simply does not keep score. Krishna says this because he has just described a person whose mind is free of intention and unmoved by honour or injury. Praise and blame are the everyday form of honour and injury, so this gives Uddhava a mark he can recognise. It asks the listener to see how much of the day goes on verdicts, and to look for a contentment that does not wait on them.

A street lamp at night lights the baker's cart and the pickpocket's sleeve with the same plain light. It does not pick whom to shine on, and it does not leave. The sage's even sight works like that lamp: it rests on every person without handing out marks.

1. Today, when you notice yourself about to call someone's act good or bad, hold the remark for ten slow breaths and see whether it still needs saying. 2. At one meal or conversation, speak no praise or blame about anyone who is absent. 3. In the evening, recall that one moment. Note whether the quiet felt lighter or heavier than the remark would have.

A woman sits at a family dinner while her brother-in-law's failed business is taken apart across the table. Every face turns to her, waiting for her to add her piece. She feels the small pull to join, either to condemn him or to rush in with praise. The teaching would change this moment in steps. First she notices the pull as a pull, a habit of ranking people the instant they come into view. Then she lets the verdict go unspoken. Next she keeps her eyes on him as a person at the table, neither a hero nor a failure. She can still pass the rice, ask how he is, and be warm. The sage in the verse is not cold. He simply does not stake his contentment on the scoreboard. Ordinary experience agrees that a remark once spoken is hard to take back, and that gossip tends to bind a room together against someone. The verse does not promise that she will feel no irritation, or that the family stops talking. It also does not ask her to ignore real harm. Where someone is in danger or being wronged, she still has to act.
