Bhagavad Gita 1.17

Meaning · English

The king of Kashi, the excellent archer, and Shikhandi, a warrior who alone could match ten thousand; Dhrishtadyumna, Virat, and Satyaki, the invincible.

Sanjaya is still reading the Pandava side's roll of names to the blind king. Three terms carry the weight. Parama-ishu-asa joins parama, best, ishu, arrow, and asa, one who draws the bow: an excellent archer, said of the king of Kashi. Maha-ratha joins maha, great, and ratha, chariot. It names a great chariot-warrior, and the glossary gives the measure: one who alone matches ten thousand ordinary soldiers. Sanjaya gives that rank to Shikhandi. Aparajita is a-para-jita, not beaten by another. Satyaki is called that. Dhrishtadyumna and Virat are named without a title. The plain sense is a count of strength. Sanjaya does not call these men righteous, and he does not say they will win. He says who stands there and how well they fight. He says it because Dhritarashtra cannot see, and a blind man can weigh an army only by names and ranks. So Sanjaya gives him the names, one by one. These are Sanjaya's words, his report of the field at that moment, and not the book's teaching. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, are not known to draw a separate lesson from this list. They treat it as a roster of the Pandava side.

A team sheet pinned to a noticeboard before a big match, each name with a note beside it: captain, fastest bowler, never been bowled out. Someone who cannot see the ground can still feel the match from that sheet. Sanjaya's list does the same for the king, turning an unseen army into names with weight.

1. Tonight, pick one task you are dreading tomorrow. 2. Write down, in plain words, the separate pieces of it: the people, the steps, the time it takes. Two minutes is enough. 3. Read the list aloud once, slowly, like a roll call. 4. Notice whether the dread feels the same size now that it has names. Do not argue with it. Just notice.

A woman sits in a corridor outside an interview room. She hears the names of the other candidates called in ahead of her, and she does not know any of them. Her heart speeds up, her palms are damp, and she has already pictured the worst of them. Sanjaya's way of reporting changes this in small steps. He names each fighter and gives each a plain rank, so a crowd becomes a count. She could do the same: list who is actually there, what each person has done, and what is still unknown. An unnamed threat feels larger than a named one, and ordinary experience confirms that a racing heart settles a little once the mind has something definite to look at. Sanjaya's list does not tell her what to feel, and it does not say how the day will end. It will not make the other candidates weaker or the panel kinder. It gives her a clear picture of the field, and the interview, the nerves and the result stay as they were.
