Conches Sounded Separately

Bhagavad Gita 1.18

Meaning · English

Drupad, and the five sons of Draupadi, all of them, O ruler of the earth, and Abhimanyu, the mighty-armed son of Subhadra, each one blew his own conch shell, separately.

Sanjaya is still counting. Having named the Pandava leaders, he now adds the next ranks: Drupad, Draupadi's five sons, and Abhimanyu, Subhadra's son. Three words carry the line. Shankha is the conch, the shell a warrior blows to announce himself and signal his troops. Mahabahu means mighty-armed, from maha, great, and bahu, arm. It is a title of strength, here given to young Abhimanyu. Prithak prithak means separately, one by one. That doubled word is the point of the line. No single blast is described. Each man lifts his own shell and blows it himself. Sanjaya speaks to Dhritarashtra and addresses him as ruler of the earth, the blind king who asked what his sons and the Pandavas were doing. The report is Sanjaya's, spoken in the moment, and it answers that question with a roll call of men taking their places. He gives no reason beyond the telling itself. He lists who was there and how they sounded. It asks nothing of the listener yet. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, are not recorded here as reading this line differently from the plain report it is.

On a dark street at dusk, each house lights its own lamp, one window after another, until the whole lane glows. No single lamp is the signal. The lane is lit because every household did its own part. The conches work the same way: each warrior sounds his own, and together they make the army's voice.

1. Next time you join a shared task, such as a family meal, a meeting or a cleanup, notice the small moment when you begin your own part. 2. Say your part aloud in one plain sentence, such as 'I will do the dishes', and then do it. 3. Afterward, spend one minute noticing what each other person added, even small things. Notice how the whole depended on each separate effort.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor before her father's surgery. Her brothers arrive one at a time. One brings tea, one asks the nurse questions, one just sits down beside her and says nothing. She has been waiting alone with dread, and she is ready to judge each of them by whether they do the same thing. The verse's picture is of men who each announce themselves in their own way, separately, and yet stand on the same side. Seen that way, she can let each brother's arrival count as his own conch, without wishing he had made her sound. She can also sound hers: say aloud that she is here. The limit is plain. Hearing the brothers arrive does not make the surgery safer, remove her fear, or replace what the surgeon and the ward staff must do. Ordinary experience does confirm one small thing: dread is easier to carry when others have visibly turned up.
