Let him keep no house of his own, and wander alone. Let him stay alert and live as if hidden in a cave. Let his conduct draw no notice. Let him be a sage who keeps to himself and speaks little. Building a house brings great suffering and bears no fruit for one whose own body does not last. The serpent enters a house another has made, and there it lives at ease.
The avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling, is telling King Yadu what the serpent taught him. Three words carry the verse. Muni is the silent sage, from the root for thinking: one whose attention turns inward, so he talks little. Apramatta means not careless, awake, with nothing slack in his watch. Alakshyamana means unnoticed: his habits carry no badge, so nobody points him out as holy. Taken clause by clause, the wanderer owns no house, goes alone, stays watchful, hides in plain sight, and speaks seldom. Then comes the reason. A house costs great trouble to build and keep, and it is fruitless, because the one who builds it is adhruva, unsteady and passing. The commentators take that to mean the body, which will not outlast the walls. The serpent shows the better way. It digs nothing. It slips into a shelter someone else made, such as an anthill or a hole, and rests there content. The question underneath is how a person can live in the world without being owned by it. The answer is to use shelter lightly, take what is given, and keep the mind free for the work that matters. The listener is asked to look at where effort goes, and whether it buys anything that stays.
A guest at a cousin's wedding sleeps in a borrowed room for three nights. She uses the bed, folds the blanket, thanks the family, and leaves without a single repair on her mind. The body and the world's comforts are that room: given for a stay, and lived in best by someone who knows it.
1. Tonight, look around the room you sleep in and name three things you keep only out of worry about losing them. 2. For one hour tomorrow, do your ordinary work without telling anyone what you did or how well. 3. Speak a little less at one meal, and notice what you were about to say that did not need saying. 4. Before sleeping, ask yourself which of today's efforts will still matter in a year.
A retired schoolteacher sits in a rented room, with a property agent waiting outside to show her a flat that would take every rupee of her savings. She is tired of landlords. The verse would slow her at one question: what is this house for? She might list what she truly needs, which is a dry roof, a quiet corner and a door that locks. Then she might count what ownership adds: repairs, taxes, disputes with neighbours and sleepless nights over a leaking ceiling. Ordinary experience bears this out, since what we own asks to be looked after. She may still buy, or she may decide that a plain borrowed room, taken gladly, leaves her mind freer. The verse does not tell her to give up shelter, and it does not settle her money questions or her fear of old age. It is the wandering sage's way, and it cannot replace a family's real need for a home or sound advice from someone who knows her accounts.
