Narayana, the one God, the Lord, draws back at the close of an age the world he made earlier through his own power of maya, gathering it in by the working of time. He remains one only, without a second, resting on himself, the support of all. Time, which is his own power, brings the powers, sattva and the rest, into balance. The first person stands as lord of pradhana and purusha.
The avadhuta begins his lesson from the spider by describing what stands before and after the world. Three words carry it. Maya is the Lord's own power of appearing as many things; the root sense is to measure out, to fashion. Kala is time, and the text calls it his own power, not a ruler over him. Sattva and the other two gunas are the strands of nature, and pradhana is nature's primal ground, held in balance when nothing is stirring. Now the clauses. Narayana made the world earlier through maya. At the end of an age he gathers it back in, and time does the gathering. Then he is one, with no second, resting on himself and not on anything else, and he is also the support of everything. While the world is drawn in, the strands of nature are brought to even balance, so none pulls against another. Through all of it he stays the first person, lord of both nature and the souls. The avadhuta teaches this because a spider is his next teacher. The spider spins and takes back its thread, and the Lord does the same with the world, and the thread was never separate from him. The verse asks the listener to see where things come from and where they return.
A teacher wipes the slate clean at the end of the day. The sums, the drawings and the chalk dust all vanish, yet the slate was under every mark and is still there. The world's marks are drawn back, and the one who bore them all remains.
1. Tonight, after a meal or a gathering, stand a minute in the room once everyone has gone and the dishes are cleared. 2. Notice what was there before the crowd, and what is still there now. Count it in plain things: the floor, the walls, the quiet. 3. Say to yourself, once, that the text calls the Lord the support of all that comes and goes. 4. Do this for a week, at one chosen hour, and notice whether the room feels emptier or only quieter.
A mother stands in the hall at midnight after her daughter's wedding. The chairs are stacked, the garlands are drooping, and the music has stopped. Months of planning have been drawn in within a few hours, and she feels a hollow that she cannot name. The teaching offers her a way to stand in that hollow. She can see that everything which filled the hall was brought out and gathered back, as the text says of the world itself. She can ask what has not left. The family, her love for the girl, and her own steady breathing are still here. Krishna's retelling says that what remains at the end of everything is the one Lord, resting on himself. She need not agree with all of that tonight to take the first step, which is to look at what is still standing after the crowd has gone. Ordinary experience confirms that a room feels different once its noise has left, and that the quiet shows what was under it. The teaching does not take away her sense of loss, and it does not say the evening mattered less. It also does not replace sleep, food or a friend to sit with.
