Her they call the one who shows the three strands, spinning out, her face turned every way. On her this whole world is strung like thread, and through her a person goes round in birth and death. As a spider draws its thread from its own heart, spreads it out through its mouth, plays in it, and then swallows it again, so the Great Lord does.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, that the spider is his twenty-third teacher. Three words carry the verse. Maya is the Lord's own power of appearing, the "her" of the first lines. Sridhara Svami takes it that way, as the maya of the earlier verses. Triguna means the three strands of her nature, and she makes them visible as the world. Samsarate means to go round, from sam, together, and sri, to move. It names the person who keeps circling through births because the web holds him. The first half says the world is strung on her like beads on a thread, and a person is carried through it. The second half gives the picture. A spider makes its thread from inside itself, sends it out, moves about on it, and takes it back in. Nothing comes from outside. The avadhuta teaches that the Great Lord makes, sustains and withdraws the world in the same way. This answers a question the earlier lessons raised: where does the world come from, and where does it go? The spider gives a small, visible case of one source that spins and gathers. The text asks the listener to see the web as the Lord's play, and to see himself as someone caught in a thread he did not make.

A woman bends at her doorstep at dawn and draws a rangoli from a pinch of rice flour, line after line, until a whole pattern spreads across the floor. By evening it is swept away. The pattern comes from her hand and goes back to it, and the world, in this teaching, comes from the Lord and returns to him.

1. Pick one thing you make fresh each day, such as a made bed, a cooked meal or a tidy desk. 2. As you finish it, say quietly, "This came out of me and will be undone." 3. When the evening takes it apart, watch what you feel. Note whether you hold on or let go. 4. Do this for one week and keep one line of notes at night.

A tea-stall owner folds down his shutters at night. Every morning he builds the stall again: the stove, the stools, the first kettle. By closing time he is tired, and the day's quarrels and small wins feel more solid than they are. The verse gives him a different way to see it. The day was a web drawn out from one source and taken back in, and the stall, the customers and the argument with the milkman were all threads on it. Seeing it so, he can fold the shutter and let the day's hurts go with the day, instead of carrying them home as if they were fixed. The text itself teaches that the world is the Lord's spinning and withdrawing, and a person goes round in it. Ordinary experience confirms only a small part: a tired mind grips what the morning will soften. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, the tiredness will lift or the losses will not hurt. A doctor is still needed for real exhaustion.
