Wherever an embodied being holds the whole mind steady with the intellect, whether from affection, from hatred, or from fear, it reaches the very form of that thing. A grub, carried into a wall of clay by the wasp and thinking only of it, does not let go of its former form, O king, and comes to oneness with the wasp.
The avadhuta, a free wandering brahmin, tells King Yadu in Krishna's retelling, and the lesson rests on three words. Dharayet comes from dhri, to hold or bear: the mind is held on something, the way a hand holds a full cup. Sneha is affection, and its root sense is oil, the stickiness of love. Dhyayan comes from dhyai, to think on something without a break. The first half states the law. Wherever a embodied being fixes the whole mind with the intellect, it goes toward the form of that object. Love, hatred and fear all count equally, because each holds the mind firmly. The second half is the story. A wasp seals a grub into its clay cell. The grub, afraid, thinks of nothing but the wasp. The text says it keeps its old form and still arrives at likeness with the wasp. A reader could take this as a claim that only devotion shapes us. The verse names hatred and fear too, so the lesson is about where the mind is held, not about how kindly it feels. For the avadhuta this is one more teacher among twenty-four. It asks the listener to notice what the mind keeps returning to, since the text says that is what it is becoming.
A tea bag left in a cup of hot water. The water slowly takes on its colour and taste, whether anyone wants it to or not. The mind is the water, and whatever it steeps in, through liking, loathing or dread, is what it comes to resemble.
1. Tonight, before sleep, ask yourself what your mind went back to most today. Name it in a few words. 2. Next to it, write whether it came from fondness, resentment or worry. 3. Pick one thing you keep replaying and give it ten fewer minutes tomorrow. 4. In that freed time, hold something you would like to resemble, such as a kind person's manner, a prayer or a name of God.
Meena, a retired schoolteacher, sits on her balcony in the evening. Her neighbour has cut down the tree that shaded her window, and an hour has passed in which she has rehearsed what she should have said to him. Her jaw is tight. When her granddaughter asks a simple question, the answer comes out sharp. The verse changes the moment in steps. First she notices that her mind has been held on one man for an hour. Then she sees that the holding comes from anger, not from any need. Then she sees what the holding is doing to her voice and her evening. Finally she can choose another object: the shade the tree gave her for years, or the sapling she might plant. Ordinary experience agrees that what we keep thinking about colours our mood and our speech. The verse does not promise that the loss will hurt less, or that the quarrel is settled, or that anger will not return tomorrow. It asks only where the mind is being held.
