So from these teachers I gained this understanding. Now hear, my lord, what I learned from my own self. The body is my teacher. It leads me toward dispassion and clear sight. It carries a being toward death, and its end is always pain. Still, through it I look into the nature of things. Knowing it belongs to others in the end, I wander free of clinging.

The avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling, closes his list of outside teachers and turns inward. He tells King Yadu the last lesson came from his own body. Three words carry it. Vairagya is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Viveka is discernment, the ability to tell what lasts from what does not. Parakya means 'belonging to another': the body is not finally mine. Now the clauses. The body is born, tires, hurts and ends in death. Its last result is pain, however well it is fed. The avadhuta does not hate it. He uses it: through its hunger, ache and ageing he studies what is real, and so he gets both dispassion and discernment. Because the body will pass out of his hands, he does not cling to it and wanders without attachment. Sridhara Svami reads the body here as the teacher that gives both detachment and discernment together. The question behind it is how a person can live fully in a body without being owned by it. The answer is to treat the body as a teacher rather than as property. The listener is asked to look at their own body honestly, learn what it shows, and hold it with care but not possessiveness.

A library book. You keep it clean, read it closely, and learn from it, but you never think it is yours, because the due date is already stamped inside the cover. The body is that book: worth careful reading, and not ours to keep.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and notice one thing your body is telling you: a stiff neck, a heavy eyelid, a hunger. 2. Answer it simply, with water, a stretch or an earlier bed, without scolding yourself. 3. Then ask once: what in my day was I gripping harder than this body can bear? 4. Repeat for a week and see what the same teacher says.

A man in his forties wakes on the morning of a long-planned trip with his back locked in spasm. He lies on the bathroom floor, angry at the body that has betrayed his plan. The verse turns the moment. First he stops arguing with the pain and listens: he has sat badly for months and ignored every small signal. Next he sees how much of his plan rested on the body staying obedient, and how little of it was ever his to promise. Then he does the ordinary sensible things: rest, gentle movement, a call to the doctor if the pain does not ease. The text teaches that the body gives dispassion and discernment together, and that is what he finds: he holds the trip lightly and the body gently. Ordinary experience confirms that pain makes us notice what we had been ignoring. The verse does not promise the pain will vanish or the body will recover. It is no substitute for medical care where that is needed.
