The highest good comes from knowing the truth of the categories (substance, quality, action, universal, particularity and inherence) through their likenesses and their differences. That knowing is born of a particular dharma.
What is the point of sorting the world into kinds? Kanada's answer is the highest good. Vaisheshika holds that nihshreyasa, the highest good, comes from tattvajnana, knowing things as they truly are. What is to be known are six padarthas, 'meanings of words': the kinds of thing a word can name. Substance (dravya) is what things are, such as earth, water or a self. Quality (guna) is what a substance has, such as colour or size. Action (karma) is what a substance does, such as rising or falling. Universal (samanya) is the shared kind, like the cowness in every cow. Particularity (vishesha) is what finally makes one ultimate thing distinct from another. Inherence (samavaya) is the inseparable bond that holds qualities, actions and kinds in their substance, and a whole in its parts. Each category is learned by comparison: how it resembles the others and how it differs. Such knowing is born of a particular dharma, or merit. Shankara Mishra's commentary defines the goal as the complete and final end of suffering. It adds that this knowing comes through the teaching itself, which is why seekers of freedom take the teaching up.
Tip a tin of mixed buttons onto a table and sort them. You group them by what they share, putting the red ones together and the four-holed ones together. You set apart the odd one that matches nothing. By the end you know the whole tin. For Kanada, likeness and difference are the two hands that sort everything that exists into its six kinds.
Read today, the sutra belongs to ontology, the part of philosophy that asks what kinds of thing exist. Its list resembles Aristotle's categories, and its questions are still open. Are there real universals shared by every cow, or only cows that resemble one another? Realists and nominalists still disagree. What makes two exactly similar things two? Physics sharpens that question, because identical electrons seem to carry no individual mark, and this strains the idea of a built-in particularity. Is the tie between a thing and its properties a further item, or does treating it that way start an endless regress? Metaphysicians still argue the point. The promise that the right categories end suffering is a different kind of claim. Psychology agrees that understanding a situation can ease distress. But no science can test a permanent end of all suffering. That remains a religious and philosophical claim.
