Nine substances, no more
Vaisheshika Sutras 1.1.5
Meaning · English
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, time, direction, the self and the mind: these are the substances.
The question is this: among the things that exist in their own right and carry qualities, how many basic sorts are there? Kanada answers with a list of nine. A dravya, or substance, is what a colour, a weight or a movement belongs to. Five are physical: earth, water, fire, air and akasha, usually called ether. Then come kala, time, and dik, direction, which let us say earlier and later, here and there. Last are atman, the self, and manas, the mind. Shankara Mishra's commentary reads the closing word of the list as a fence: nine, no more and no fewer. He answers three challenges to that. Gold seems to fit none of the nine, yet he places it inside them, as a kind of fire, a claim he says will be argued later. God counts as a self, not a tenth substance. Darkness looks like one more thing, but he holds it is only the absence of light. He adds that substance is named first among the categories because every other category rests on it and because it bears on liberation.
Picture a workshop cabinet with nine labelled drawers and a firm rule that no tenth drawer will ever be added. When an odd part turns up, nobody builds a new drawer. They work out which existing drawer it belongs in. An empty slot is not a part at all. The drawers are Kanada's nine substances, the odd part is gold, and the empty slot is darkness.
This is ontology: an attempt to list the basic kinds of thing that exist. Modern chemistry also sorts matter into elements, but it counts more than a hundred, built from protons, neutrons and electrons. Earth, water, fire and air are not elements today. Water is a compound, air a mixture, and fire a chemical process rather than a stuff, so gold as a kind of fire has no modern match. Physics joins time and space into one framework, and whether spacetime is a thing in itself or a set of relations between things is still argued. Treating darkness as an absence of light agrees with physics. Counting self and mind as substances is a form of substance dualism; most philosophers of mind now lean physicalist, but the question remains open.
