Colour, taste, smell and touch; numbers; sizes; separateness; joining and parting; farness and nearness; cognitions; pleasure and pain; desire and aversion; and efforts: these are the qualities.
Kanada has just listed the basic bearers, the substances. The next question is what those things have. His answer is the guna, or quality: a feature that lives in a substance and cannot stand apart from it. He names seventeen. Four are each tied to one sense: colour to sight, taste to the tongue, smell to the nose, touch to the skin. Then come number, size, separateness, joining and parting, and being far or near. The last group belongs to a self: cognitions, pleasure and pain, desire and aversion, and effort. Why does the school need a separate category? Redness is not a rose, yet there is no redness without some rose or cloth to carry it. Shankara Mishra's commentary reads the closing 'and' as taking in seven more: heaviness, fluidity, viscosity, lasting disposition, merit, demerit and sound. That gives the school's familiar twenty-four. He reads even the grammar. Cognitions are put in the plural, he says, to deny the Samkhya view of one single intellect. For Vaisheshika, every quality points back to a substance that bears it.
Picture a blue mug on a kitchen table. You can name its colour, feel its warmth against your palm, judge its size, and see that it touches the saucer and stands apart from the plate. None of these can be lifted off and set down by itself. The mug maps to the substance. Everything you can say about it maps to a quality held in it.
Modern ontology still argues over this exact picture. One side holds that properties need a bearer that has them. The other, bundle theory, holds that an object is nothing more than its properties together, and Hume made that case for the self. Physics complicates the sense qualities. Colour depends on light, surfaces and the eye, so many philosophers since Locke have called it a secondary quality and treated size and shape as primary. Frege argued that a statement of number is about a concept (how many things fall under 'moon of Jupiter') rather than a property of the things themselves, which differs from Kanada's view. Philosophy of mind still debates whether thoughts, pleasures and efforts need a self to belong to. The basic split between a thing and its features remains a working tool in everyday reasoning and in logic.
