Lifting up, casting down, bending inward, stretching outward, and going: these are the kinds of action.

The question is simple. Besides things and the qualities they carry, what else must a full list of reality include? Vaisheshika answers with karma, which here means action or motion: a substance shifting its place. A quality like colour can sit still in a pot. Action is the pot changing its contact with what surrounds it. Kanada names five kinds: lifting up, casting down, drawing in, stretching out, and going. Shankara Mishra's commentary explains the fifth. On one reading, going is simply another word for action, listed separately to gather many motions under one name. On another, going is a kind of its own, covering motion with no fixed direction: spinning, flowing, a flame leaping, a body bowing. He adds that entering and leaving are not further kinds. A man walking from one house to the next is entering to one onlooker and leaving to another, yet he makes one movement. Those labels record a viewpoint, not the motion itself. For the school, then, action is a category of its own. Only substances carry it, and its work is to make and break contact between them.

Picture someone pounding spices with a pestle. The arm lifts the pestle, then drives it down. The elbow bends to draw it close, then straightens to push it out. Finally the cook carries the mortar across the kitchen to the stove. Up, down, in, out, and a walk in no set direction. Every motion of the body falls into one of these five.

Physics today describes motion as change of position over time, measured by speed and direction in three dimensions. It does not sort motion into five kinds, because any direction is as good as any other. Up and down stand apart only because of gravity. Vaisheshika's list reads better as a sorting of how motion looks to a human observer than as physics. The deeper claim is about ontology, the study of what kinds of thing exist. Vaisheshika gives action its own category, separate from things and their qualities. Modern philosophy still debates whether events and processes are basic or reducible to things. The point about entering and leaving holds up well as a point about description: the same motion gets different labels depending on where the onlooker stands. It only loosely echoes the physicist's idea of motion relative to a frame of reference.
