Existent, non-eternal, having substance as its inherent cause, an effect, a cause, possessing a universal that is also a differentiator: this is what substance, quality and action have in common.
Of the categories Kanada has named, the first three are kinds of real thing. Dravya, substance, is what is there: earth, water, a self. Guna, quality, is what a thing has: a colour, a size, a pleasure. Karma, action, is what a thing does: rising, falling, moving. The question is what the three share. Vaisheshika names six marks. Each is sat, existent: we can truly say 'it is' of all three. Each is non-eternal: it can begin and end. Each has a substance as its inherent cause. Each can be an effect. Each can be a cause. Each carries a universal that groups it with its own kind and sets it apart from the other two. Those universals are substance-ness, quality-ness and action-ness. Shankara Mishra's commentary adds a careful point. Some substances, such as atoms, never perish and have no inherent cause. So the marks describe each category as a kind that has such members. They do not describe every single member. He also notes that only these three are tied to existence in this way, which marks them off from the remaining categories.
Picture a potter at the wheel. There is the lump of clay, its reddish colour, and the spinning. Each is really there. Each started and will stop. Each sits in some stuff. Each came from something and leads to something. Clay, colour and spin are three different kinds of thing. Yet they share one family likeness, and that likeness is what the sutra lists.
Modern ontology still sorts the world into roughly these bins: objects, properties, and events or processes. Aristotle drew a similar list, and philosophers still argue whether events are basic or built from objects changing. Vaisheshika's claim that all three can be causes fits ordinary scientific talk, where things, their properties and their changes all figure in explanations. Its claim that each carries a real universal, such as quality-ness, is still contested. Realists about universals agree. Nominalists say only particular things exist and the general word is our grouping. That debate remains open. Physics has no single entity matching these categories. Its basic entities are fields and particles whose properties are measured. The Vaisheshika atom, which the commentary treats as never perishing, is a philosophical posit, not a measured particle.
