The Mark of Substance

Vaisheshika Sutras 1.1.15

Meaning · English

That which has actions and has qualities, and is the inherent cause: this is the defining mark of substance.

What makes something a substance rather than a colour or a movement? Kanada answers with a lakshana, a defining mark: a feature found in every member of a class and nowhere else. For Vaisheshika a substance, dravya, is marked three ways. It can have kriya, action or motion. It can have guna, qualities such as colour or weight. And it is the samavayi-karana, the inherent or material cause: the stuff in which an effect comes to exist, as threads are for a cloth. Shankara Mishra's commentary explains why the mark works. On the school's view, qualities and actions carry no qualities of their own, and neither does absence. So having qualities separates substance from every other category. He meets an objection: a newly made pot, in its very first instant, has no qualities yet, not even colour. So the mark means a thing that is never permanently without qualities. He adds that number, size, separateness, joining and parting also belong only to substances, so these too mark them out.

Picture a ball of bread dough on a kitchen counter. You can push it and it rolls. It is pale, soft, warm to the touch. Bake it and it becomes the loaf; the loaf exists in that dough, not beside it. The paleness cannot roll, and the rolling has no softness. Only the dough carries both and turns into something new. That carrier is what Kanada calls substance.

Kanada's picture sits inside a debate that modern ontology, the study of what kinds of thing exist, still runs. Aristotle drew a similar line between substances and what is said of them. Against both, the bundle theory associated with Hume holds that a thing is nothing over and above its properties, with no bearer underneath. Neither side has won. Physics agrees in part: matter is described through properties such as mass and charge, and objects are built from smaller parts, close to the idea of a material cause. But physics treats motion as a change of state, not a separate kind of entity, and at the smallest scales the line between a thing and its properties grows harder to draw. Whether substance is basic remains an open question.
