A quality rests in a substance, has no qualities of its own, and is not an independent cause of joining and separating. This is the definition of quality.
After defining substance, Kanada asks the next question: what is a guna, a quality, such as colour, taste, size or number? He gives three marks. First, it is dravyashrayi, something that rests in a substance: a colour is always the colour of some thing. Second, it is aguna, without qualities of its own: red cannot itself be heavy or sweet. Third, it is not an independent cause of samyoga and vibhaga, joining and separating. Shankara Mishra's commentary shows why each mark is needed. Resting in something is true of substances too, since a pot rests in its two clay halves. So 'no qualities of its own' is added. That still fits action, which also rests in a thing and has no qualities. So the third mark is added: a motion by itself brings things together or apart, and a quality does not. The word 'independent' keeps in those qualities that help with joining only alongside other causes. For Vaisheshika, then, a quality describes a thing; it never by itself joins or separates things.
Picture a blue door. The blue is nowhere except on the door. Take the door away and no blue is left hanging in the air. The blue has no weight or smell of its own to add. And the blue never shuts the door; a push does that. The door is the substance, the blue its quality, and the push an action.
Modern philosophy still sorts the world much this way. Aristotle drew a similar line between substances and the features that exist in them, and today's debates over properties continue it. Some of the claim holds up well: a colour with no coloured surface is hard to make sense of. Some is open. Many philosophers allow properties of properties, such as scarlet being a shade of red or a pain being intense, and that strains the claim that qualities have none. Physics presses from two sides. Fields have strengths at every point of space, so it is unclear what thing those values belong to. And the view called dispositional essentialism holds that properties such as charge are powers to act. Vaisheshika's narrow claim, that a quality never joins or separates things on its own, sits inside that live debate.
